Before you hire in New York
- 1New York licensing covers larger jobs. The Department of Labor defines a licensed mold project as work on areas greater than 10 square feet.
- 2Small areas can be a do-it-yourself job. The Department says that if the affected area is under 10 square feet and you have no sensitivity to mold, you can remove it yourself.
- 3Plan on separate people for the assessment and the removal. New York prohibits the same individual from doing both on the same property.
- 4Check that a company is licensed on the Department of Labor’s licensed mold contractors search before work starts. It is unlawful to do or advertise mold work without the right license.

New York mold questions
For larger jobs, yes. The New York State Department of Labor defines a mold project as work on “areas greater than ten (10) square feet,” and says it is unlawful to “engage, advertise or hold themselves out as a mold assessor, remediation contractor, or abatement worker unless they have a valid mold license.” It notes “limited exceptions such as home or business owners performing work on their own properties.”

No. The Department of Labor’s rules include “prohibiting the performance of both the assessment and remediation on the same property by the same individual.”

Usually not. The Department of Labor says: “In most cases, air sampling and mold testing is unnecessary.” It also notes that “the mere presence of mold does not trigger any obligation to obtain an assessment or perform remediation.”
